Brianna Lafferty:
Reflections of Adventure

Growing up in an outdoorsy family, outdoor adventures were a significant part of Brianna's life. Yet, despite the joy these experiences brought, she faced unexpected challenges that left her questioning her own abilities. From involuntary muscle movements to a diagnosis of Myoclonus Dystonia at the age of 18, life took an unexpected turn.

For years, Brianna navigated a world of limitations, told to avoid activities she loved for fear of injury or harm. But at 30, a new neurologist offered a glimmer of hope: brain surgery to install a Deep Brain Stimulator. The procedure was life-changing, alleviating pain and tremors, and opening doors to new possibilities.

With a newfound lease on life, Brianna embarked on a journey of self-discovery and adventure. From co-authoring a book about her journey to pursuing outdoor activities with renewed vigor, each step forward was a testament to resilience and determination.

Joining Outdoor Mindset (OM) provided a sense of community and support, propelling her to pursue her dreams. Despite setbacks and challenges, she applied for the OM Scholarship, determined to experience backpacking in Utah.

After overcoming obstacles and setbacks, the day finally arrived for her and her friend’s  adventure in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. With family and friends supporting her, she set out on a 748-mile journey, embracing every moment of the breathtaking scenery and challenging terrain.

From navigating miles of trails to discovering hidden gems like the Jacob Hamblin Arch, each step was a testament to strength, courage, and the power of community. Through it all, Brianna found gratitude for the opportunities that lay ahead and the unwavering support of those who believed that she could do it.

As she reflects on her journey, her heart is full of gratitude for the gift of adventure and the boundless possibilities that lie ahead. With Outdoor Mindset, family, and friends by her side, the future is filled with endless opportunities and the promise of new adventures.
